Basic Battle Rules
There are two types of battle - sanctioned and unsanctioned. All battles with wild pokemon are unsanctioned, as are all battles with trainers outside of cities (and in some cases, within cities as well). Unsanctioned battles are not governed by official League regulations, and as such underhanded tactics are possible. Each type of battle has some notes that affect how it runs, so each gets a section.
Sanctioned Battles
Sanctioned Battles include all battles in official Leagues or Ladders, most battles within cities (as those would occur in gyms or other sanctioned battling locations) and all battles with Slate League personnel (note, even if the battle is sanctioned, the ability of the personnel in question to enforce League rules is the only thing that can force a trainer in the wilderness to observe those rules).
Sanctioned battles occur in one of two formats - either single or double. In a single battle, each trainer uses only one Pokemon at a time - in a Double battle, each trainer uses two pokemon at a time. There are also Multi-battle formats, in which more than two trainers participate - this could be in the form of two two-man teams in a double battle, or multiple trainers sending their Pokemon into a battle royale.
Unsanctioned Battles
Unsanctioned battles, on the other hand, would normally have no restrictions, but for simplicity's sake, please don't toss out more than two Pokemon at a time. We could just impose a diceroll to see if you can command all your Pokemon, but we're already edging towards "too many rolls."
Battle Basics
In a battle, the Pokemon with the highest Speed goes first, followed by the Pokemon with the next highest speed, and so on (in the case of battles between more than two Pokemon). Battle follows a post-edit format - that is, first you decide what you're going to do and make all the dice rolls you need for that post, and then you edit in the actual writing of your actions based on the results of the dice.
When you begin a battle, the first turn is both you and your opponent choosing your pokemon (or, in the case of a Wild pokemon, you being attacked/attacking and choosing your pokemon). Therefore, at the start of a battle, both you and your opponent will post a Battle Header, with this format, overtop your actual post:
It's just a basic stat sheet, which helps keep all your information started. You would also post a Battle Header every time you changed Pokemon, keeping track of THEIR information.
One thing that is worth keeping in mind is that, unless you have a reason to, your character does not know the opponent's move list. The Battle Header is posted for convenience and is intended to provide information to the player controlling that Pokemon and any Mod who is moderating the battle, and nothing more.
Note also that HPTotal is different from HP. Your HPTotal is your total amount of HP - your HP under stats is your HP stat, not your HP pool.
So, lets go back to the Rattata from the Pokemon Rules thread. If it were to get into a fight with someone else, this is the Battle Header that would be posted at the start of the fight.
