Named for the fact that the forest that wraps around the northern part of the region is made up of mostly ash and yew trees, the latter of which is the bowyer's ideal wood and produces the best bows. The forest itself is quiet at first, but as you begin to pick up on the sounds the chorus of bugs all around you becomes clear. Lightningbugs flit between the branches at all times of day, providing their light where the sun mostly can't. The trees even seem to bend over the portion that had been cleared for the highway, greedy for the sunlight.
The other thing about the forest itself that strikes people on their first trip through is how old it is. Amidst the new growth are truly ancient trunks, grown wide with their wisdom. Some are simply surviving specimens of the dominant ash and yew species from the earliest days of the forest, but many are other breeds - titanic oaks hundreds of years old, firs and birches.
The lightningbugs are not the only bugs in the forest, either. Alongside the mosquitos and irritants that come with a damp forest environment, bug Pokemon flit between the trees, preying endlessly on the local grass type population. It isn't uncommon to find an Oddish with clearly scarred head-leaves, the victim of a Caterpie or Weedle while it slept in the dirt during the day.
Of course, there are whispers of old fire types that dwell with constraint beneath the boughs...
At the north end of the forest is Firebug, a quiet city nestled within the surrounding forest.
